Even with competition from two new releases, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire retained its top position at the home box office for the second time in a row. Universal’s action film Monkey Man debuted at number two thanks to a modest performance that didn’t exactly match the online buzz that it had been generating, while 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen, the latest attempt to reboot the classic horror franchise, under-performed at number five. Overall business this weekend is expected to fall short of the $90 million mark, which is off massively from the same weekend last year when The Super Mario Bros. Movie was breaking records.

Monkey Man, directed by and starring Dev Patel, was initially planned as a Netflix project. However, Universal acquired it for a reported $10 million after Jordan Peele showed interest in it. Peele has been actively involved in its marketing, but despite the online attention, the movie didn’t quite meet its weekend earnings projection of $12 million. In its first three days, Monkey Man made approximately $10 million at the box office, boosted by positive reviews and a healthy B+ CinemaScore from opening day viewers.

Godzilla x Kong saw a significant drop of 60% in its second weekend after having the second-best opening weekend of 2024. The movie earned an estimated $31 million this weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to over $130 million. With a reported budget of $135 million, Godzilla x Kong12 has breathed new life into the MonsterVerse following the unexpected success of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, which debuted during the peak of the pandemic in theaters and on streaming platforms. Given the unique circumstances of its release, the film’s box office performance wasn’t necessarily indicative of the franchise’s popularity. However, Godzilla x Kong is a definite success, suggesting that fans can expect more movies in the series.

Dropping to third place in its third weekend is Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which earned around $9 million at the domestic box office. This latest addition to the popular supernatural-comedy series has already earned $89 million and is expected to surpass the $100 million milestone in the coming weeks. However, it’s uncertain if it will reach the $130 million mark, which is approximately the total earnings of its two predecessors, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.

In the fourth and fifth positions were Kung Fu Panda 4 and The First Omen, both earning around $8 million. Although Kung Fu Panda 4 has been in theaters for almost a month, it has grossed over $165 million, making it the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, just behind the first film which ended its domestic run with over $215 million. Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two dropped out of the top five for the first time but still earned around $7 million in its sixth weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to nearly $265 million.
